Drunk labourer drowns in Cooum river

A 34-year-old man slipped and fell into the Cooum river near Chintadripet late on Sunday night.

Chennai: A 34-year-old man slipped and fell into the Cooum river near Chintadripet late on Sunday night. His body was secured by personnel of the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services on Monday morning. The victim, Sasi Kumar, a casual labourer and resident of Amman Koil Street, was said to be in an inebriated condition when he slipped and fell into the river, police said.

Police investigation revealed that Sasi kumar was walking along the West Cooum road near his residence in Chintadripet when the accident happened. “It seemed that he was too drunk to walk in a straight line and he was swaying and fell into the river,” a police officer said. Platform dwellers there informed the fire control room following which fire tenders from Egmore and Triplicane rushed to the scene.

However, Sasi Kumar's body couldn't be traced in the dark and the search was called off. On Thursday morning, rescue personnel fished the body out of the water and handed it over to the Chintadripet police who have moved it to the Government Royapettah Hospital for autopsy.
