Soumya rape case: SC bench to hear curative plea by Kerala govt

A curative petition is a rare remedy entertained by the Supreme Court on ground of bias.

New Delhi: A six-judge bench of the Supreme Court will hold in-chamber hearing on Thursday on a curative petition in the Soumya rape case in which murder charge was dropped against convict Govindachamy.

The curative petition has been filed by Kerala government.

A bench, comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justices Ranjan Gogoi, P C Pant, U U Lalit, Dipak Misra and J Chelameswar, will consider the matter in the chamber.

Justices Gogoi, Pant and Lalit had on September 15 last year had dropped the murder charge against the convict, but had upheld the life term for raping the 23-year-old sales representative in Kerala.

The victim's family had dubbed the verdict as heart breaking.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place when Soumya, an employee of a Kochi shopping mall, was travelling in a ladies coach on the Ernakulam-Shoranur passenger train on 1st of February 2011.
