Chennai: Man held for beating granny to death

The victim R. Manimekhalai (70) was attacked by Kamal (35) repeatedly with a club. He left her to bleed before fleeing the spot.

Chennai: Tiruvallur police arrested a hotel employee for allegedly beating his 70-year-old grandmother to death for refusing to give money for liquor at Thirupalaivanam near Ponneri on Wednesday.

The victim R. Manimekhalai (70) was attacked by Kamal (35) repeatedly with a club. He left her to bleed before fleeing the spot.

“Neighbours who saw Kamal fleeing in a panic on suspicion visited Manimekhalai’s house and found her injured badly. They alerted police and informed ambulance service. She was rushed to the government hospital in Ponneri, but doctors that declared she was brought dead,” police said. Meanwhile, the Thirupalaivanam police registered a case and arrested Kamal. Police said that Manimekhalai stayed with her daughter Latha in her house in Vanchivakkam junction near Ponneri after the demise of her husband Ramamurthy. Latha’s son Kamal used to visit the house and demand money from his grandmother to buy liquor. On Wednesday, Kamal turned violent and fatally attacked the elderly woman in a fit of rage when she refused to give him cash, the police said.
