Anakapalli: Man jumps from police station terrace after harassment allegations

Visakhapatnam: A 36-year-old auto-rickshaw driver identified as K. Nani, leaped from the terrace of the first floor at Nathavaram police station in Anakapalli district late on Saturday evening. Fortunately, he suffered only minor injuries and was promptly taken to the local government hospital for treatment.

The incident unfolded after Nani was summoned to the police station in response to a complaint filed by a local woman accusing him of sexual harassment. While being questioned by the authorities, Nani suddenly rushed to the terrace and jumped, rendering himself unconscious. In the aftermath, speculations spread, and locals surrounded the police station, alleging that Nani had been subjected to harassment by police.

Sub-inspector Lasminarayana, however, refuted the claims of any mistreatment and assured the crowd of a thorough investigation into the matter. After receiving first aid at the hospital, the villagers took Nani with them.

Circle inspector K. Ramanayya clarified that a case had been registered against Nani under sections 354A and 354D for harassment of a woman. He denied any involvement of police personnel in assaulting Nani at the police station.

“During questioning he ran away and tried to escape from the station fearing a possible judicial remand. Currently he is under treatment and we will pick him up again and produce him before the court,’’ the CI said.
