Chennai: 29 sovereign jewels snatched in 3 hours

Chennai: Three chain snatchings incidents were reported in the city on Monday night and around 29 sovereigns of gold were snatched from four women.

In the first case, S. Manjula (45) and her daughter S Geetha (20), residents of Kovilambakkam were returning home on a two-wheeler late in the evening, after shopping at Chromepet.

“While they were near Pallavaram radial road, two bike-borne men knocked them down, and both sustained injuries. Before passers-by rushed for help, the men snatched five sovereigns of gold chains from the duo,” said a police officer.

The duo was rushed to the Chromepet government hospital and a case registered at the Pallavaram police station. Investigations are on.

In the second incident, Mahalakshmi (55) and husband Rajan (50), were riding on the Thoraipakkam - Pallavaram radial road on Monday by 10.30 pm, after attending a wedding at Thoraipakkam.

Two men on a bike, wearing helmets, knocked down Mahalakshmi and snatched her 15 sovereign gold chain, and fled.

The couple lodged a complaint with Chitlapakkam police. Investigations are on, said a police officer.

In the third incident, Devi Bhuvaneshwari (35), resident of Peter’s Colony in Royapettah and a ministerial staff at the D.S.P office, was on her way home with her husband after attending a funeral at Pallavaram.

As they were near Meenambakkam flyover, two men on a bike pushed aside the couple’s bike and snatched a nine-sovereign gold chain of Devi. A case was registered at the Meenambakkam police station. Investigations are on.

A special police team headed by Mount DC was formed to nab the culprits. Four women had lost 29 sovereigns of gold in a matter of three hours. CCTV footages have been lifted from the spot. c
