Hyderabad: Educated youth turn cyber frauds

Hyderabad: Educated youth take to cyber crime to earn money. They commit online frauds by either establishing a fake website or by luring fresh graduates with job opportunities.

The cyber crime police arrested one person on Saturday for cheating the public by posting an online advertisement and collecting money from many persons. In July, the Gopalapuram police busted a fake job racket and arrested an HR recruiter.

“The accused, M. Babu Rao, was working for Sunshine Technology in Seethaphalmandi. He updated his details on Just Dial and cheated unemployed youths by promising them jobs in government and private sectors,” said Sridhar, Gopalapuram police inspector.

According to the police, Babu Rao was an MBA graduate and floated job consultant offices under different names like Sai Universal Consultants and Softech Solutions. He cheated many aspirants by promising them jobs in leading software firms in the country.

“There are several cases where educated persons target unemployed educated youths. This year, we booked around 50 cases,” said P. Ravi Kiran, police inspector of cyber crimes.

“They just have to shell out around Rs 5000 to get a lump 3,000 resumes from famous job portals like Naukri or Shine. They set up a small call centre and arrange the resumes according to the qualification,” he said.

For example, a graduate with electronics background will receive a call from Bajaj Electronics, with a tempting job offer,” added Mr. Kiran.

“The fraudsters also get their advertisement published in prominent newspapers in the weekend classified section to grab attention of job-seekers ,” said a senior police official.

“They examine the resumes in detail and force the victim to pay lakhs of rupees. This year around 50 such cases have been registered” noted inspector Ravi.

“We request job aspirants to make sure that the firm is legitimate before investing money,” said Avinash Mohanty, deputy commissioner of police, cyber crime police.

Job melas in city to curb crimes by youth

The Hyderabad city police is conducting job melas for the unemployed youths in the city.

“We started an initiative under the leadership of Mr Mahender Reddy, Hyderabad city police commissioner. After noticing the youths getting attracted to criminal activities, we started a recruitment drive and provided them with free training classes. We hired around 250 constables who are undergoing training in the district headquarters,” said R. Srinivas, police Inspector of Gandhinagar.
“The rehabilitation and other methods are temporary solutions. We have hired experts to clear all job-related queries. This will help them understand the job market in a better way,” added Mr Srinivas.

“Lack of knowledge about jobs is an issue. To tackle this, we are conducting a drive with the help of companies to educate the youth,” said a senior police officer.
