Chennai: Spurned man stabs woman in public view

Police arrested the man, Sathya Narayanan, a street vendor selling plastic items in Parry's corner in connection with the case.

Chennai: Irate over a young woman’s refusal to marry him, a 37-year-old man attacked her with a knife in broad daylight, inflicting grievous injuries on the woman. The incident happened near T Nagar on Wednesday. Police arrested the man, Sathya Narayanan, a street vendor selling plastic items in Parry’s corner in connection with the case.

Investigations revealed that the accused and the victim are neighbours at the slum clearance board tenements in Kannagi Nagar near Thoraipakkam. Sathya Narayanan used to visit the house of his neighbour, P. Sumathi, who has been living with her 21-year-old daughter after being separated from her husband for the past 11 years.

For months, the man had been persuading Sumathi to get her daughter married to him, in spite of both the mother and daughter politely turning down the proposal, police said.

On Wednesday noon, Sathya Narayanan trailed the woman and made the proposal again. The woman is pursuing a diploma course at an institute in T Nagar and was on her way to the institute when she was intercepted, a police officer said.

“He trailed her from the bus stop and intercepted her on a desolate street. The woman, apart from turning down his proposal, also warned him to not bother her, after which the man attacked her with a knife he was carrying,” according to an investigating official.

Hearing her screams, public rushed to the rescue and moved the girl to a hospital where she is undergoing treatment. Mambalam police registered a case and arrested the man. He was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
