Vinayakan suicide: Lokayukta calls probe officer

The court asked whether the concerned sections were not invoked to save the cops.

Thrissur: The Lokayukta in Thiruvananthapuram, hearing the case of suicide of Dalit youth Vinayakan of Engandiyur here, has asked the investigation officer crime branch (Ernakulam) SP P. N. Unnirajan to be present before the court in the next sitting on March 2. It also considered the reply of CB DySP (Palakkad) Feroz M. Shafeeque to its show cause notice for not including IPC section 306 (abetment of suicide) and SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act in the FIR against the two CPOs of Pavaratty Station who allegedly assaulted Vinayakan a day before his death in July.

The court said that in his explanation, he had stated that he did not find anything from the statements collected in the case to slap those sections. At the same time, he said he was ignorant about adding them. “These to explanations are contradictory. The court also asked to produce the order regarding the transfer of the case to SP Unnirajan to know whether it was after the Nov. 9 order making the DySP the fourth respondent,” P. K. Suresh Babu, the lawyer representing Vinayakan’s father Krishnan, said.

In November, the Lokayukta had come down heavily on both the Valapad CI and the DySP who earlier investigated the case for their alleged attempt to save CPOs Sreejith and Sajan accused of custodial torture of the Dalit boy. The court asked whether the concerned sections were not invoked to save the cops.
