Bengaluru: Debt-ridden couple kill son, hang themselves

Police said Somashekhar bought silkworm cocoons on loan from local farmers to sell in the market.

Bengaluru: A debt-ridden couple ended their lives after killing their one-and-half-year-old son at their home in the Kanakpura rural police station limits.

The deceased are 36-year-old Somashekhar who worked with silkworms in the sericulture industry, his 27-year-old wife Sudha and their son, Preetham. The incident took place in Lakshmipura village.

Police said Somashekhar bought silkworm cocoons on loan from local farmers to sell in the market. When he allegedly failed to clear the loans on time, the farmers visited his house on Monday morning, and abused him verbally. They left after threatening him and his family with dire consequences if he failed to repay the debt in a week. Upset, the couple is suspected to have hanged their son and then themselves from a ceiling.

The incident came to light when the couple's elder daughter returned from tuition and saw the bodies of her parents and brother. Police have registered a case.
