Hyderabad: Dad-son duo dog kill dog that attacked 7 others

They said when the dog attacked them, there was no action but when they killed it in defence, they were harassed at the police station.

Hyderabad: A day after the police booked a father and son for killing a dog in Hayatnagar, residents of Bhagyalatha Colony claimed that before attacking Mr Venkanna’s son, the dog had attacked others in the same area too.

They said when the dog attacked them, there was no action but when they killed it in defence, they were harassed at the police station. Police booked Mr Venkanna and his 15-year-old son for killing a street dog on Monday. Mr Venkanna claimed that on Monday afternoon, the dog attacked his son and bit him.

“In defence, I hit it with a stick and it died after some time. I had no other option but this. If it attacks the kids more severely, who will take the responsibility?” questioned Venkanna.

Residents of Bhagyalatha Colony said that though dog menace was quite common in the area, there had been no prior incidents when a single dog had attacked so many people in one day.

“The same dog attacked nearly seven persons in our area on Monday. We have informed the GHMC so many times about this, but the problem continued,” one of the residents said.

Meanwhile, activists said that human safety should be above animal welfare.
“There is no point in animal lovers making this an issue when they killed a dog that attacked them. Instead, they should ensure that stray dog control is done properly and safety of people should be ensured,” said Dr Venkat Rao, member Medical Council of India.

Doctors performed a post-mortem on the dog on Tuesday and sent samples for analysis to check if it was affected by rabies. The dog had died of head injuries after being hit with the stick.
