Teenager's body fished out from Puzal lake

On Sunday, Aksah went for a dip at Krishna canal with his friends. He jumped into the water even after fishermen warned him not to do it.

Chennai: A teenager who went for a swim in a canal near Avadi drowned on Sunday evening. His body was recovered from Puzhal lake on Monday. The boy was identified as K. Akash, resident of Gandhi Street in Thendral Nagar, Thirumullaivoyal. He was studying in class 12 at a government school there.

On Sunday, Akash and a few of his friends went to take a dip in Krishna canal at Vellanur near Avadi when the incident happened. The canal was filled due to recent rains. Police investigations revealed that Akash jumped into water against the advice of the men who were fishing from the banks. Within a few minutes, he could not be found in the water after which his friends alerted the locals. Avadi Tank factory police personnel rushed to the area along with rescue team from the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services.

After searching for over two hours, Akash couldn’t be spotted after which the rescue efforts were called off due to darkness. Meanwhile, on Monday, the boy’s body was recovered from the Puzhal lake, Avadi station fire officer said. Akash’s parents are casual labourers. The teenager’s death is the third case of drowning on Sunday. In neighbouring Kancheepuram district, two youths drowned in Palar river in separate incidents. While the body of one of the youths was recovered on Sunday, efforts are on to trace the body of another person.
