Chennai: Techie blackmails Facebook friend, arrested

A couple of months ago, Geetha learnt that Gokulnath was married and has a child too. The duo fought over the issue.

Chennai: The city police on Thursday arrested a Bengaluru-based software professional after he was found to be trying to blackmail his estranged FB friend-turned girlfriend after she severed the affair after learning that he was already married.

The arrested techie was identified as S. Gokulnath (30), who is working in an IT major in Bengaluru. He also has a residence here in Mohanram Nagar, Mogappair. He had threatened his ex-girlfriend that she would have to pay Rs 5 lakh or to face dire consequences otherwise.

The victim Geetha (32), resident of MMDA colony, is a divorcee. She told the cops that Gokulnath got acquainted with her through Facebook a couple of years ago. He had reportedly claimed that he was not married and had won her over in course of time.

The duo was in a close relationship. They had travelled extensively and Gokulnath had spent lavishly on her.

A couple of months ago, Geetha learnt that Gokulnath was married and has a child too. The duo fought over the issue.

Owing to this, Geetha’s responses towards him turned cold. She also stopped responding to his calls, and texts. An enraged Gokulnath warned her that he had spent so much on her. He also demanded that she could opt out of the relationship only after paying him Rs 5 lakh.

His other demands included retention of their relationship until the settlement is arrived at. As the harassment mounted, Geetha preferred a complaint with Arumbakkam Police who registered a case and arrested Gokulnath. The claims made by Geetha were corroborated with the help of the call records between the duo. Gokulnath was produced before a court here on Thursday and remanded to judicial custody.
