Hyderabad: Booked for his wife’s suicide, professor ends life

About 18 months ago, Ramadevi became pregnant and returned to her maternal home.

Hyderabad: Two days after he was booked for his wife's suicide, a London-based professor reportedly ended his life by lying down in front of an oncoming train near Ghatkesar in Hyderabad. Police found that Prof. M. Gangaiah, 32, was booked in a case in Andhra Pradesh for abetment to suicide and harassment of his wife.

Both Gangaiah and his wife S. Ramadevi, 27, were natives of Martur mandal in Prakasam district of AP and married about three years ago after an affair. The couple pursued their post-graduation in science and were working in Saudi Arabia.

About 18 months ago, Ramadevi became pregnant and returned to her maternal home. She delivered a girl about nine months ago. Gangaiah shifted to London as a professor a year ago.

According to Secun-derabad Government Railway police, Gangaiah’s body was found on the track between Ghatkesar and Bibinagar stations on Saturday. He was identified based on his ID cards and Martur police was duly informed. Martur police said that his wife Ramadevi had committed suicide on August 29, and there was a case booked against Gangaiah.

“Gangaiah came to India about a month ago to see his wife and daughter. During his stay at Martur, he reportedly pressurised his wife to continue her studies and do her PhD for better opportunities. Ramadevi was not keen and they quarrelled,” said GRP Inspector K. Adi Reddy.

Gangaiah returned to London on August 29, the day Ramadevi committed suicide. When he heard of her death, he took a flight back to Hyderabad and reached her on August 30. He went to Secunderabad station and booked a ticket to go to Martur. On the night of August 31, his body was found on the railway tracks.

“A case was registered against the professor at Martur police station under IPC Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 498 (detaining with criminal intent, a married woman), following a complaint from his wife’s relatives that he was responsible for her death. We feel that on learning about this he went into depression and took the extreme step,” said inspector Adi Reddy.

He said that police is investigating how he reached Ghatkesar and who he spoke to. The inspector said that apart from their baby, Gangaiah and Rama-devi are survived by their aged mothers. Gangaiah has an elder sister.
