Adilabad police arrest nine over sale of newborns

ADILABAD: Adilabad Rural police on Wednesday arrested nine persons in connection with the sale of two newborn girls to childless couples from Karnataka.

Giving details, SP Udaykumar Reddy said Gangadhar, a resident of Bangaruguda colony in Adilabad town, had already been a father of three girl children. His wife recently delivered twin girls and died of complications while birthing the twins.

Gangadhar thus decided to give off the babies to two childless couples from Karnataka, though in exchange of ₹2.5 lakh.

The Karnataka couples had approached Gangadhar through an RMP Shinde Jagannath and his sister Rama, who lives in Karnataka, who knew the childless couples. Another person Abdullah also acted as a mediator.

The incident came to light when the District Child Welfare Officer complained against Gangadhar after coming to know about the sale.
