8K Forest Fire Points Detected In Odisha Till April 7; 99 Percent Doused

Odisha has witnessed forest fire in around 8,000 points this summer, till April 7. However, around 99.5 percent forest fire points have been successfully doused, informed Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Debadutta Biswal here on Monday.

As many as 27,000 forest fire cases were reported during the same period in 2023.

“The incidents of forest fire have gone down drastically due to awareness among people and rainfall activities,” said the PCCF.

According to Biswal, forest fires in around 200 points were reported on Monday.

Sources said the highest number of forest fire incidents were reported from Malkangiri district due to agricultural related activities, collection of Mahula (Mahua) flower and for poaching of animals, as well.

“It has also been observed that some miscreants are setting fire for mischief. Stern action is being taken against such violators,” informed the top forest official.

The PCCF informed that a total of 367 squads have been pressed into service to take immediate measures to douse the flames. Similarly, 2,365 safety kits and over 4000 fire gloves were provided to people engaged in dousing fire.

“The forest department has engaged 330 specially designed vehicles to tackle forest fire and other necessary measures. If required, the department may consider taking the help of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF),” said the PCCF.
