FIDGET, the money spinner

This click-happy toy is the rage amongst youngsters and children in the city...

Bengalureans have a new toy to keep them engrossed and it is also the latest craze among antsy children and adults. The fidget spinner, it seems is what everyone who has way too much energy have been spotted clicking on across the city. The model is a device that looks like a cross with a bearing in the middle that spins on one’s fingers.

This new toy is in great demand nowadays. But there is a science behind it. This type of toy is known to help people who have trouble focusing, and are fidgety in general. “I wanted to see what the hype was all about. The fidget spinner is a good pass time for those who have too much energy and are fidgety. They also help to keep one concentrating on the work you are actually doing. It subconsciously helps concentration and it actually worked out for me,” says 23-year-old, Surya Sindwani, a data engineer from the city.

The gadget also has several health benefits — reducing stress to post-traumatic stress disorder. Sinchan Sarkar, a Christ College student says, “I have been using the fidget spinner for two months now. The fidget spinner increases concentration and helps me focus. ADHD (Attention Deficiency Hyperactive Disorder) is a condition which makes one fidget, and the usage of fidget spinner helps alleviate it. If you are at home and have nothing else to do, they can keep you busy.”

Fidget spinners can be found in a variety of shapes and colours. Gadget enthusiasts are crazy about them and even children can be seen sporting them at parties. The gadget has become quite sought-after. Ankita Dawn, a psychologist cautions, “Fidget spinners are basically used by children with autism and ADHD. Many are using this toy today, and they are going crazy about it without having much knowledge of its effects. Many schools have banned the usage as children are not paying attention to teachers due to it. It should be a tool, not a toy that can be used by everyone. It is too early to say whether it is beneficial or not.”

Almost all the stores in the city have seen their sales go up, Vijay Bhaskar, a store manager at a city super store says, “Mostly young people, especially teens prefer buying fidget spinners. Mostly, boys over 15 years are buying this new toy, and it has become viral now. We sell around 15-20 pieces everyday and people are going crazy about it. Presently, it is the toy of the month.” Given that there are very few studies on its effects, psychologists advice against using them.
