A recent controversial letter of the Archbishop of Delhi, Rev Anil Couto, made a splash on Twitter. Tweeple of the Hindu majority were naturally enough incensed at the thought of the Church getting into politics and the Vatican was trolled although the pastor urged his followers to pray for the country before the 2019 election. It was in his speaking a “turbulent political atmosphere” that he seemed to get political and was severely criticised.
The interplay of faith and politics is not at all new to India and it is not as if Hindu holy men have not played the same card to ask for votes for certain parties. Amit Shah asked the holy man not to polarise Indians while Rajnath declared that India does not discriminate on the basis of religion while reminding the priest that he had to shed his “prejudiced” mindset.
Lost in a hot debate over such a sensitive matter as religion was the sight of strains on the secular fabric of the nation by both sides taking intensely political stands on who should rule India. In a surcharged atmosphere it may never be possible to find a truly secular viewpoint. It is best that religion be kept out of politics was what the tweeple seemed to say even amid their anger.

Booby prize should go to Hotstar for making a video predicting an IPL final with CSK playing KKR. The leaked video set tongues wagging over the IPL being fixed. It was fortunate then that Sunrisers made it to the final disproving claims of fixing.
