Government Tribal High School club brings out digital record of early books

Meenankal tribal school initiative on 100th year of Sreekanteswaram's Sabdatharavali.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Social Science Club of Government Tribal High School, Meenankal, has brought out a digital record of early printed Malayalam books on the 100th year of Sreekanteswaram Padmanabha Pillai's Malayalam dictionary Sabdatharavali. They are being brought out in two volumes. The first has the scanned copy of the first or second edition of the particular book. The second part is the version printed in the latest technology.

The first part has 12 books -Sabhdtha Tharavali, Malayalam-English dictionary of Benjamin Bailey, Malayalam-English dictionary of Herman Gundert, Cherupaithangalkku Upak- arartham, Samkshepave-dartham, Malayazhmayude Vykaranam, Kerala Pazhama, Ghathaka Vatham, Kunthalatha, Indulekha, Dharmaraja and Oru Himayala Yatra - and the second seven - Kerolpathi, Kerala Paniniyam, Indulekha, Marthandavarma, Dhar- ama raja, Ramarajya Bahadur and Ithihiya Mala. Apart from the first edition of Indulekha, the latest brought out by Sayahna foundation has also been included in the second part.

The joint study by language experts P. K. Rajasekharan and P. Venugopalan had found out many corrections made in the subsequent edition of Indulekha, said a teacher, who preferred not to be named as he felt the credit should go to the students. They had the support of Wikipedia activist and blogger Shiju Alex, writer V. Vinayakumar, Sayahna foundation, Kerala Sahitya Akademi, archive.org, Wikilibrary and Swathanthra Malayalam Computing in their efforts.
