Tamil Nadu intensifies bird flu preventive measures

The authorities have directed the district collectors to stock anti disinfectants and bleaching powders.

Chennai: In the wake of Karnataka periodically recording bird flu cases, Tamil Nadu on Saturday extended its ban on poultry and livestock bi-products coming from the neighboring state.

Entry of trucks from Karnataka carrying poultry and by-products is restricted and instructions have been passed to all the western districts in this regard, an animal husbandry official said.

The department had also placed veterinary teams in all the 12 entry points to the state through Coimbatore and 20 entry points in Krishnagiri, to check on vehicles carrying poultry and feed from Karnataka, official sources said.

A high level meeting conducted by animal husbandry minister Balakrishna Reddy reviewed the bird flu preventive measures taken by the district authorities. The authorities have directed the district collectors to stock anti disinfectants and bleaching powders.

The animal husbandry department has also reached out to Southern Railway instructing it not to entertain any poultry consignment from other state entering TN.

As a preventive measure, state forest department is also carrying out census and is regularly monitoring migratory birds arriving in TN bird sanctuaries, the release added.
