Manipuri children take heart, for home

KOCHI: They are from Manipur and are toddling in their life. Six kids from the north-eastern state who are in the age group of two to nine and who faced serious congenital cardiac problems can now look for a better life, courtesy the Lisie Hospital under the Syro-Malabar Church, which conducted free corrective surgery for them. Cardinal George Alancherry was at the hospital on Saturday to wish them a bon voyage back home and a steady life ahead.

It was through Fr. Lijo Ennamplasseril, the director of Christian Medical Center at Imphal, that the authorities at Lisie hospital came to know about the financial and health issues in the region. Following this a medical team from Lisie hospital conducted a free screening medical camp and identified that a significant number of children as having congenital heart disease.

As phase one of the program, these six children were shortlisted for treatment. A group of 19 members comprising patients and their parents arrived on the Onam day to the hospital for treatment. The pediatric cardiac team lead by Dr Edwin Francis, Dr Thomas Mathew, Dr C Subramaniam and Dr. Anu Jose did the interventions and surgeries for the children. The hospital had announced 100 free cardiac surgeries for patients suffering from cardiac problems. In addition the hospital has planned to do 130 more surgeries in association with philanthropists.
