Kerala: Health scheme for middle-aged women launched

Lack of social intervention is affecting the mental health of women'.

KOZHIKODE: Lack of social intervention is affecting the mental health of women, feels writer and medical practitioner Dr Khadeeja Mumtaz. Inaugurating the newly envisaged health scheme for middle-aged women, she said even though a majority of women are going for jobs, their interaction with the society is decidedly less. Those at home are not getting a chance to mingle up. "Families nowadays are moving into a Victorian concept.

“Similarly, the consumerist culture is prevailing. The new age issues have also severely affected women both physically and mentally," she said. "The health scheme launched by activist doctor T.P. Mahroof Raj in association with Kudumbashree and Women’s Commission aims at addressing these issues." Kudumbashree is responsible for implementing the scheme which will include counselling, awareness and treatment if needed.

Dr Raj said the government had assured assistance in implementing the scheme in every district, and women in the age group of 35- 40 and 55- 60 will be the beneficiaries. They will get training in skills they are interested in, besides engaging in various socio-cultural programmes.
