THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed an eye hospital to pay Rs 50,000 in compensation to a woman for allegedly prescribing wrong spectacles. As per the complainant of Grace Luke of Kudappanakunnu, she was referred to Vasan Eye Care Hospital, Pattom, from CGHS due to a headache and uneasiness in eyes. She approached the hospital in the last week of April 2014, and a doctor advised her to conduct some tests.
A week later he checked the test results and said 75 percent of veins in her eyes were damaged. She was advised to wear spectacles with -0.75 power but the problem prevailed. By August she approached another hospital which said she had no vein problem. They also found that her power is plus and not minus.
With this, she approached the forum demanding Rs 2 lakh.
The hospital contested that the woman had not purchased spectacles from them and had not contacted them when the problem persisted. On verification the forum found that the doctor had advised her -0.75 lenses for her though her right eye required +.05 and left eye required +0.75. So she had to use +1.50 glasses. Also, though woman’s family had a clinical history of glaucoma, she did not have this. With this, the forum asked the hospital to pay compensation apart from an additional 2,000 as costs.
