Rock those tones

Tonal dressing, where one sports varying shades of the same hue, is the latest trend that is catching on.

A chic way to dress up this summer is to wear varying shades of the same hue from head to toe. Tonal dressing was a huge hit at the recently held Amazon India Fashion Week. Celebrities like Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut and Gigi Hadid were spotted carrying off the look with élan. What more? Men can also go tonal, just like the style icon Kanye West does. Yeezy is known for wearing shades like military green, black, white and brown from head to toe.

Designer Althea Krishna says that in the fashion world, tonal dressing is used to slim your silhouette or look a little plumper. “People who want to look slimmer can go for colours like blue, coffee brown, burgundy and black — it also makes you look tall. To look plumper, you can go for light shades such as green and yellow,” she says.

Pairing it right is also very important. “You can wear a light blue top and team it up with a dark blue flared skirt or trousers. Another good way to do it is by wearing a complete white outfit and using just one bright colour for your accessories,” informs Althea.

Stylist Indrakshi Pattanaik says that using shades of the same palate is a huge trend, especially in menswear. “Everybody is doing it. Singer M.I.A. also does a lot of tonal clothing. It is used to make a person look taller, just like how black makes one look thinner.”

Designer Shravan Kumar says that the trend is set to stay throughout the year. “Peaches, pastels and watermelon shades are a huge trend. The new white is powder blue. One can wear a peach outfit and team it up with peach lipstick, bag and sandals,” he says.
