Feline' purrfect

Kitty cats are not just taking the Internet by storm, but this season, they'll be in your wardrobes too!

You find them adorable and love to keep them as pets, but would you like it if they took over your wardrobe? Not at all, say lovers of the feline being. Cat-themed fashion is the in thing right now.

From feline prints to cat shaped bands, from bags with catty prints to cat-like jewellery, kitty cats seem to be taking over the fashion world. Stella McCartney’s pre-fall show had cat-printed jackets, skirts and dresses and Gucci too has launched cat-print knits.

Melanie D’Souza who has launched her own fashion label is a passionate cat lover. She just ordered a trippy cat tank top from RDKL.

“I might have a feline clothing line out soon. Cat ladies were once considered crazy. But I think with social media, we crazy cat ladies have come together – the obsession is real. There’s nothing more popular on the Internet than a cat video.”

With all the bigwigs having cat themed collections, Melanie says, “My cat has a mind of her own – just like fashion. There’s just something quite chic and elegant about a cat, wouldn’t you say? With the cat ladies coming out of their shells, it seems like the trend is here to stay.”

Social media is proof enough that kitties have taken over the Internet by storm. Cat-shaped and kitty-inspired jewellery and accessories too are making their presence felt.

Sreesha Shetty, a jewellery designer says, “I’ve just designed a cat-themed ring set which includes a midi ring that can be worn as a pinky finger ring and a normal ring. Both have cat ears. We sold out on those rings on the first day we launched it and we’ve restocked new ones again today.”

Ask stylist Meghna Bhalla what she thinks of this trend and she says, “All major fashion houses base their collection on forecasts. That’s why you’d probably see a few trends gaining prominence in a particular season. I guess this particular trend has gained momentum on many grounds – it’s cute, takes the edge off serious fashion and is relatable to a wider audience. With the myriad cat videos floating about on the Internet, especially now, it automatically builds context for association and familiarity and hence is noticed even more.”

But how much is too much when it comes to going the catty way? “When it comes to styling cat-themed jewellery, a big ‘no’ would be matching it with cat inspired clothing or accessories. The best way is to be subtle with it,” says Sreesha.

If you’re a cat aficionado, then it’s time to put on those ‘purrty’ clothes and go meow!
