The Delhi High Court has issued an order to the creators of the film Jailer, instructing them to ensure that starting September 1, theaters do not display the jersey of the IPL team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), as worn by a contract killer in one of the film's scenes. Justice Prathiba M Singh, presiding over a lawsuit brought by the IPL team, Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, against the filmmakers for utilizing the team's jersey in a disparaging manner, has decreed that prior to its broadcast on television, satellite, or any OTT (Over-The-Top) platform, the Rajnikanth starrer must undergo alterations.
It is alleged that in the film, the contract killer who wears the jersey makes derogatory and misogynistic remarks about a woman. The IPL team contended that the unapproved negative portrayal using their jersey could harm their brand image and reputation.
Following the filing of the lawsuit, the filmmakers and the IPL team reached an agreement to resolve their disputes. It was decided that the filmmakers would modify the scenes featuring the team jersey to ensure it is not identifiable as the RCB jersey. This modification entails the removal of primary colors and branding elements found on the RCB jersey.
Given that the movie was already released in theaters on August 10, the parties consented to executing the alteration in the theatrical version within ten days, by September 1, 2023. Justice Singh emphasized that the filmmakers and all parties representing them are obligated to adhere to the agreed-upon terms and conditions. Since the lawsuit was settled during its initial hearing, the court ordered a full refund of the court fee to the plaintiff.
