I need more opportunities: Ravi Varma

The actor talks about testing new arenas in B-Town and K-Town.

Ravi Varma is a well-known face in Tollywood. And apparently he was keen to become an actor since he was a kid. And as he became a part of the industry which fascinated him, the journey was exciting, he reckons. Having been around for nearly a decade, barring a brief gap of three-four years in between, Ravi has gradually been moving forward.

How did the journey begin? “I wanted to get an acting degree in the US, but it was quite an expensive affair. While I was working in the US, Vennela happened.

Rakhi, Bommarillu, Sainikudu, Ready, Bhadra and Jalsa followed. It was quite amazing to be a part of the world that always fascinated me. Luckily, I got interesting roles. Some of them were menial, but well placed and I was really happy about it,” he shares, adding, “But at a point I wanted more and that’s why I took the break.”

The actor is a complete mix of cultures. “My parents are from Andhra but I grew up learning the Telangana dialect and Urdu. Thanks to my teachers, I speak shudh Hindi too,” he shares, adding, “In fact, I have dubbed for myself in the Hindi version of Ghazi.”

Once back, it took him a while to let everyone know about it but today, he’s happy with several films coming his way. In fact, Ghazi marks his Hindi debut while he’s set to make his Tamil debut with the remake of Kshanam.

“I am really excited about the new arenas. I have learnt that characters which aren’t people friendly have limitations in terms of the career. Being a baddie can restrict the opportunities. I am not very particular about the length of roles because the aim is always to be part of a good film. I have managed that most of the times,” he states, adding on a parting note, “It’s not often people write unique characters for anyone other than the leads. I am not satisfied and can do a lot more but I need more opportunities to show my versatility.”
