Rangabali movie review: Another boring and forgettable film from Naga Shaurya

Cast: Naga Shaurya, Yukti Thareja, Goparaju Ramanna and Shine Tom Chacko

Director: Pawan Basamsetti

Rating: 1.5 stars

After a series of duds like ‘Varudu Kaavalenu, ‘Aswathama’ and ‘Phalana Abbayi..,’ young actor Naga Shaurya returns as a small-town guy who loves to remain in the spotlight. He manages to showcase his comic timing but his face-off episodes with the villain (Tom Chacko) lack the punch.

Naga Shaurya, who was mostly confined to soft ‘lover boy’ roles, wanted to flex his muscles this time, but he should have chosen the right script for it. Debutant director Pawan Basamsetti intends to blend comedy and action in equal measure. While he succeeds in the former but falls flat with the latter.

Of course, there is a love story between Naga Shaurya and Yukti Thareja, when he moves to Visakhapatnam from Rajavaram, but his love story hits a roadblock when Yukti’s father opposes their relationship. The movie could have worked had it spent more time on the kind of violence the town is built over, instead of just brushing by it in a dull flashback, involving veteran actor Sarath Kumar and less on unwanted duets and fight scenes that come out of nowhere.

Nonetheless, comedian Satya shines bright with his comic timing and one-liners. In fact, Satya had won accolades when he spoofed popular TV journos in his interview videos and rocked the internet prior-to release.

It’s a story of a young guy who has a care-a-damn attitude and enjoys life with his friends in Rajavaram and always craves for ‘attention’ to be eventually called 'Show'. No doubt, Shaurya and Satya keep the proceedings alive with their flair for comedy but couldn’t salvage an otherwise boring film. When his father sends him to Visakhapatnam Medical College, Shaurya falls in love with Yukti. How his love story is connected to ‘Rangabali’ centre, a popular spot in his hometown and also about one person- Ranga Reddy and his connection with him.

Naga Shaurya is in his elements in fun-centric scenes but when he turns serious during his clashes with baddies, he is not upto the mark. Yukti Thareja fails to impress while popular Malayalam actor Tom Chacko tries to salvage a poorly-etched baddy role. Others like Sarath Kumar, Murali Sharma are just adequate for their roles. Unfortunately, the title ‘Ranga “Bali' is close to the audience suffering in theatres.
