The great south indian cook-off

Telly and cooking go hand in hand across the globe, but these shows on regional channels are faves as they take morsels of foodiedom from everywhere.

Popular TV soaps, sports events, reality shows, and premiere movie screenings, aside, there is one particular genre on television that is making the audience hungry for more. Cooking shows are the mood of the moment, we know, as they rule the “roast” globally. With the highest ratings across regions, the Kannada audience loves its favourite cooking shows. All regional channels have their own signature shows — for example Oggarane Dabbi on Z Kannada anchored by Murali recently crossed 1,000 episodes and is still cooking successfully. Bengaluru Chronicle reports on the great South Indian cook-off!

When the clock strikes 12 noon, try surfing channels on TV and there are shows galore cooking new recipes for their hungry audiences. Some of them are so popular that the fans even record it for their personal collections, and many foodies fish it out on YouTube while watching their favourite chefs and sharing secret recipes.

At present, Oggarane Dabbi, with 1,000 episodes is the flavour of the season with good ratings on Kannada TV. The anchor, Murali, shares his experience on what makes a dish tasty. “The show is a big success because we maintain it as a very simple cooking show with no melodrama. We invite the common man to share recipes, and we are honest about the outcome of the recipes. I personally taste them, express my honest opinion so that the audience can cook it with a simple method,” says Murali.

He further adds that no recipes are repeated and it also has a special segment for non-veg lovers on weekends — Murali Military Hotel, where they invite expert non-vegetarian specialists who run those delectable military hotels across the state. The shows also have other segments emphasising on eating unique food to stay healthy by ayurvedic experts.

Noted actor-director-producer Sihi Kahi Chandru, who pioneered the art of cooking shows on the Kannada small screen is back on Udaya TV with a new cookery show Bharjari Bhojana. “It is all about mouthwatering and appetising treats for the audience,” he shares.

Paakashale aired on Suvarna provides a platform for amateur cooks to learn from experienced chefs, and Bhanuvarada Baaddota anchored by Chef Range Gowda on Kasturi TV is another treat for non-vegetarian lovers to learn from, on Sundays.
