Music therapy in hospital

The therapeutic music programme is a joint initiative by the Kochi Biennale Foundation and Mehboob Memorial Orchestra.

One would have never thought that a garment maker and banker could be good at entertaining people. However Rajamony T.V. and Shiny Joju have proved everyone wrong. These professionals stepped into the shoes of entertainers at the weekly ‘Arts and Medicine’ show at the Government General Hospital.

Rajamony, who is employed at a bank in Chittoor, Ernakulam, and Shiny, a makeup artist and garment designer based in Ernakulam, took a break from their regular jobs and teamed up to give a good time to all at the hospital for the 226th episode of the show organised by the Kochi Biennale Foundation.

Rajamony belongs to the Kochi-based Sangam troupe and is also part of a devotional troupe that gives performances at temples. Shiny too performs in and around the city.

“The opportunity that I got to sing in ‘Forever Pancham’, a programme commemorating the birth anniversary of the legendary music composer R.D. Burman in Delhi, is an experience I cherish,” says Rajamony, adding that he feels privileged to perform at the hospital. “The instant response from the audience is gratifying,” he says.

The two singers crooned a total of 15 soulful songs in Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi, including four duets, at the programme. Rajamony opened the concert with the Hindi hit Main Shayar Toh Nahi, while Shiny’s first song was Cheera Poovukalkumma from the 1991 movie Dhanam. Rajamony also gave a Tamil touch to the event by singing Ilaya Nila Pozhigirathey from the 1982 movie Payanangal Mudivathillai.

The therapeutic music programme is a joint initiative by the Kochi Biennale Foundation and Mehboob Memorial Orchestra. It is sponsored by CAFS (Casino Air Caterers and Flight Services) to provide solace to patients.
