Minmini Moments: Singer performs at the Ernakulam General Hospital

Singer Minmini's performance at the Ernakulam General Hospital for the patients brought back great memories.

The bustling Ernakulam General Hospital which has patients awaiting their turns, doctors busy with duty, nurses carrying out their chores with a smile and pregnant ladies taking a walk came to a standstill on Wednesday when an angel’s soothing voice filled the air, easing their pressure and despair. It was singer Minmini who, with her mellifluous voice which, years back gave music lovers goosebumps with A.R. Rahman’s ‘Chinna chinna asai’. She doesn’t hide her joy to have performed at the 140th Arts and Medicine programme organised by the Kochi Biennale Foundation. “I am more than happy to perform in such a platform,” shares Minmini.

Hailing from a small town in Kerala, Minimini had captured the attention of music directors like Ilaiyaraja and went on to lend her voice to more than 2000 songs in seven languages when one day, she lost her voice. “Though I am not completely fit and healthy, I haven’t given up on singing. I am busy with programmes and stage shows. Well, I believe that Almighty will help me perform,” smiles Minmini sitting next to her husband Joy Mathew.

With evergreen Malayalam super hits like ‘Souparnikamritha’ (Kizhakkunaram Pakshi), ‘Oonjal Urangi’, ‘Neelaraavil’ (Kudumbasametham), ‘Kakka poocha’ (Pappayude Swantham Apoos), ‘Paathiraavayi’ (Vietnam Colony), Vellithinkal' (Meleparambil Aanveedu), ‘Aarunee’ (Ghazal) and the latest ‘Kanmaniye’ (Mili), she conquered millions of hearts.

“We are honoured to have Minmini perform at the event which aims at providing a few moments of happiness in a hospital environment,” says Bonny Thomas, research coordinator, Kochi-Muziris Biennale.
