The Poomaram singer

Faisal Razi, who shot to fame with the Poomaram' song, which he composed and rendered, is unfazed by the overnight popularity.

The song is on everyone's lips - ‘Njaanum ..Njanum Entaalum...’. In the recent past no other song has gained the kind of popularity the ‘Poomaram’ song has enjoyed. The video of the song had a fresh faced Kalidas sitting amidst a group strumming a guitar, leading the group to sing along.

The video itself had crossed a whopping 5 lakh views on the first day of its release on YouTube. Everyday, social network saw a different version of the song being covered. Discussions ensued; trolls ruled, some liked it, some complained and a few others took time to elaborate the history behind the song. While the discussions raged on day after day, unfazed by all this was Faisal Razi, who moved on to create the next song for the same movie — Poomaram.

Faisal, who lent his voice for the song ‘Poomaram’ and composed it as well, watched in silence as his life changed overnight. How has the past few days been? “I am very happy. I am a tad busy, but still very happy. A lot of people have been calling me to appreciate my work.”

Faisal is being bombarded with offers for playback singing and music direction. “I have been getting offers, but I will take them only after finishing my work for Poomaram. The next one is also a melody.”

Elaborating on the history of the song, Faisal says, “When I joined Maharajas College, this was one of the songs I heard my seniors sing in those days. It was written by two people in Kodungallur and it reached Maharaja’s College back in 2008.” Faisal had joined Maharaja’s College, Kochi, for BA Music. “I liked the song and its lyrics. So I learnt it, composed it and was planning to release it as an album.

That is when I met Shine sir (Abrid Shine). He asked me to sing a song and I sang this one. I told him about my plan to release it as album which is when he asked me if I could give it to his movie. The tune we used to sing in college was quite different, this is my version. Nothing else has been changed.”

About the negativity the song has been getting online, he says, “I am taking everything positively. There are people who are painstakingly taking time to degrade the work. I believe they are wasting their time. I also believe that if something is being attacked, it must be having some value.”
