Vijay Antony is gearing up for his next film, intriguingly titled Kolaigaran (Murderer) in Tamil and Killer in Telugu. The film, which also has Arjun in the lead, is directed by Andrew of Leelai fame. International beauty pageant-winner Ashima Narwal forays into Tamil cinema. A murder mystery, Andrew says that if a murder happens for right reasons, there’s nothing wrong in it. That’s what the story is all about and it is not the usual hero-villain story, he claims even as he speaks to us.
Typical of his iconic style, this film of Antony also has a negative title, comment.
“In fact it was he who came up with this title after I gave the script narration. Though I had the initial concern that Kolaigaran has a negative tinge to it, it was a perfect title for the intense story. But Vijay Antony did not take it that way. Moreover, negative titles work well for him. In fact, he is a very positive person in real life. Now that the movie has shaped up well, 50 percent of the success of the film would go to the title only,” Andrew quips.
While both Vijay Antony who plays Prabhakaran and Arjun who essay Karthikeyan share equally powerful roles, the filmmaker reveals that the uniqueness of the film is its screenplay. “Though it is narrated in a non-linear pattern, it is structured in such a way it appears to be in linear fashion. This fragmentation of screenplay was a bit challenging.”
Tell us about working with Vijay Antony who was your classmate in college. “I have watched all his eight films after he donned the greasepaint. I know his strengths and weaknesses. Apparently, he knows his limitations very well. Vijay Antony is like a volcano and it will erupt when situation warrants. His character in the film is also similar, which made my job of extracting the best from him (smiles).”
While composer Simon King’s songs are already popular, Mukes, who had his tutelage under ace PS Vinod is the cinematographer. On Ashima, he says that her role is very crucial. “She has a lot of bearing in the script and has given a good performance. A thorough professional, she would write her dialogues much in advance to get a perfect modulation.”
