Vijay appreciates Modi, but criticises repercussions

The actor finally decided to talk about Modi's demonetisation policy.

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s interest in politics and his philanthropic social activities are widely documented. While several biggies from Kollywood as well as Bollywood including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Suriya, Dhanush, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, reacted to PM Modi’s demonetisation of 500 and 1000-rupee currency notes by praising the move, Vijay took his own time to voice out his opinion, and finally opened up on Tuesday morning.

He said, “The central government’s decision is certainly a welcome one and it is a courageous move. There’s no doubt that this would elevate the economy of our country. When the motive is big, there will be repercussions as well — but this should not be bigger than the goal itself. I wish they could have avoided situations wherein people are not able to get food, medicines and essential commodities.”

He added that all that he watched the news and it disturbed him — “There were reports about an old lady who sold her property for her grand daughter’s wedding, and was pushed to the extent of committing suicide when the currency she had was rendered invalid. Similarly, a newborn died because the parents could not buy medicines with old currency notes. Because of the 20 per cent of affluent wrongdoers, the remaining 80 per cent are suffering now!”

The Thalaivaa actor reiterated though that it was an appreciable move by Modi’s government — “They could have analysed the pros and cons that would arise with such steps. The panic situation has settled now and is not as bad as it was a few days back. But those in the rural setup are still under stress and I hope the government sorts it out soon.”
