Not many actresses choose an intense role to debut in cinema, but Wamiqa Gabbi did it with confidence in Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam. She played the role of a woman unhappy with her marriage and the film also dealt with the sensitive subject of marital rape.
Wamiqa then went on to do strong roles in Telugu and Malayalam too. “My ambition with regard to cinema is not to get famous. I want to be proud of the work I do. So when a strong female character like that in MNM came my way, I couldn’t say no,” begins Wamiqa.
She is now playing one of the female leads in Iravaakaalam, which also stars SJ Suryah and Sshivada in the lead roles. The teaser of the film was released recently and has garnered a good response.
Wamiqa will begin shooting for her portions later this month and shares her excitement, saying, “Iravakaalam team sent me the English version of the script and to be frank, it is the only script that I completely read in one go. It was that engaging.”
Wamiqa adds that she has never been this nervous about a film before — “I have played a role of a wrestler for the Malayalam film Godha and it required so much effort, but it is Iravakaalam that has gotten me nervous. Ashwin Saravanan, the director, is one of the most intellectual people I know. With him, and technicians like cinematographer Vijay Karthik on board, I am almost over-confident that the film will be kickass.” Wamiqa has also signed on another Tamil flick and the official announcement is expected soon.
