Vanessa Hudgens recently confirmed her participation in the stage musical adaptation of The Notebook.
Fans however, are sceptical about Vanessa’s choice. The Notebook is an iconic and heart wrenching novel written by Nicholas Sparks, who was accused of homophobia on the very same day Vanessa gave her nod for the musical.
A report by the Daily Beast highlighted Sparks’ email exchanges with the former headmaster and CEO of his Christian academy, Saul Benjamin. The emails in question were a part of evidence for a lawsuit filed by Benjamin accusing Sparks of encouraging discriminatory practices in his school, Epiphany School of Global Studies.
According to www.toofab.com, the emails suggest how Sparks kept pushing back at Benjamin’s attempts in making the school more diverse and progressive. Sparks was also alleged to have stopped the formation of a gay club in his school.
Vanessa’s decision received quite the backlash by fans who took to Twitter to express their annoyance. As reported by www.toofab.com some of these tweets read:
“There’s something hypocritical about simultaneously having “pride” colours on your Twitter icon while sharing this homophobe’s (Nicholas Sparks) new musical adaptation...” another wrote, tagging Hudgens again.” And “No, sweetie, we don’t do Nicholas Sparks stuff anymore...” Sparks denied these allegations and marked them as “false”. He defended the dignity of his school by saying “Epiphany is and remains a place where students and faculty of any race, belief, religion, background or orientation should feel welcome.”
