Exclusive: My mother's teachings were instrumental, says Vivek on his social causes

Vivek plays the lead role in the web series, Inside Edge alongside Richa Chaddha.

“I remember when I earned from my first film Company, my mother told me that if at all I want to gift her something, I should help the needy. She told me: ‘Extend support to those who are looking for aid. Always believe in giving more than taking.’ And this stayed with me over the years, and soon it became an intrinsic part of who I am,” says Vivek Oberoi.

Recalling the tsunami tragedy that struck the country in 2004, Vivek shares, “I remember food was being thrown from trucks to people who, until a day ago, were self-sufficient. We tried cooking food to feed the masses but soon ran out of supplies. I was feeling so helpless that all I could do was pray for a miracle. And it came in the form of food trucks from around the country. That day I was convinced that when you try to help people without a selfish motto, the heavens extend their help as well.”

Vivek attributes his philanthropic nature to his mother. “My mother’s teachings were instrumental in my desire to make a difference in the society. I started a school that provides free education for girls from different economic backgrounds. We have had some girls rescued from brothels who have joined the school as well. Presently, we have about four such schools in operation. My mother is an integral part of these institutions and often mentors the young students,” he adds.

Vivek has not forgotten the treatment Bollywood meted out to him. “It was a difficult phase as I was subjected to lobbying, but I hung in there. Today, I only believe in giving back to the society and so, I try to bring about smiles. We all need to do our bit,” he concludes.
