Exclusive: I want Akshara to fight her own battles, says Shruti Haasan

“Like any family that is healthy and supportive, my parents have always supported meâ€.

Return after a hiatus is called a comeback. However, not many actors are fond of this particular word. Says Shruti Haasan, “I don’t like this word ‘comeback’. It feels like I have been resurrected. For me, acting has always been a balancing act. As a country, we are quite diverse in our filmmaking. We actors have films from other regional languages to do as well, especially now since people enjoy crossover cinema. So, I find the word ‘comeback’ very strange.

She continues, “For me, it is really about the characters and the roles that I am playing and not the language. I don’t advantageously decide on my choices. I have always gone with the flow. I know I have been working in different languages. Work is keeping me busy, both performing arts and singing. So, of course, if I am engaged in some project, I cannot take up anything else until I finish it.”

Talking about sharing screen space with her dad, Kamal Haasan, Shruti says, “As an actor, it is a dream come true, and as a daughter, it feels unbelievable. I went through a gamut of emotions, and at times it got tough because he is my dad. But we sailed through, and this film is very special to me.”

Shruti lets us in on her equation with her sibling Akshara. “Like any family that is healthy and supportive, my parents have always supported me, and I support Akshara. Undeniably, everybody has to fight their own battles. Whether it is the pressure of your legacy or other people’s conceptions, the struggle is real. I have never given importance to all these issues as it would hinder my progress. I wish the same for her,” she concludes.
