Right from scripting, I had Irrfan in mind: Qarib Qarib Singlle director Tanuja

The film, also starring south acterss Parvathy in the lead role, has opened to extremely positive reviews.

Mumbai: Tanuja Chandra hails from a family of writers be it her mother Kamna Chandra, who is busy writing even now or brother Vikram Chandra, who is also known for penning scripts. Having penned for Yash Chopra’s Dil Toh Pagal Hai, which was a commercial success, Tanuja also collaborated often with Mahesh Bhatt.

Tanuja has now come out with her film, ‘Qarib Qarib Singlle,’ almost eight or nine years after her last.

Speaking on the film, she said, “Actually, if you can complete a script in one year maximum then you may say you are super fast. If I had not come up with this film, I would have said the same thing. As a director, before we say Action, a lot has to go in. We need to complete the script first and then go on casting, which has to strike the right cords, essentially for the characters written. There after, the whole team has to fall in place.

About three ‘weird’ people Tanuja, Irrfan and Parvathy coming together she laughs aloud and says, “Right from the writing stage, I always had Irfan Khan in mind. I wanted to present him not the way he has mostly been portrayed on the screen, ie. a serious avatar. I wanted to present him in a different manner, as the odd ball albeit tender and sensitive. I also desired the man to be presented as progressive. The character also appreciates strong and independent women. So who else could bring all these traits together onto the celluloid?”

Coming to Parvathy, as her character in the film she states, “For me, there were no weighty issues. She is cute and my own character is similar to her. She represents the mid-30s. She is a strong woman but a little nervous. All this has to come with vulnerability. How both my characters meet through social media and go on their journey forms the crux of this romantic saga. And what happens when he remembers his earlier love interest is also something to watch out for.”

Last but not the least, Tanuja is planning another romantic saga. She is busy penning it as well. What about her own romantic side? Laughing aloud and says, “Lucky in cards usually are unlucky in love. No, in this film there is nothing from my real story. I have picked up stories from real experiences of people belonging to the society.”
