Celebrating desi fashion on the global stage

Sonam Kapoor recounts her first experience featuring an Indian designer abroad

Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor’s influence on the Indian fashion landscape and pop culture is undisputed, and she’s also seen as India’s fashion ambassador to the world. Sonam was the first to wear Indian designers at major global events! The actress speaks out about how she came to represent the ‘local’ on the world stage.

“It was my first Cannes appearance,” she says. “I was working with an international brand and they were taking me to Cannes. My sister Rhea and I discussed the options, and felt we should wear an Indian designer on a global platform. We wanted to wear a designer who was young, someone who represented the modern and young India.”

Talking about her choice of an Indian designer on that occasion, Sonam says, “I have known Masaba [Gupta] since we were kids, we were in Kathak class together. I remember, I wore a Masaba saree, draping it myself. All of us young girls representing the global brand that I was endorsing were sharing one make-up artiste. I remember going there and suddenly this photographer came and took a picture of me. And the next thing I knew, I was on the cover of a leading fashion magazine in America!”

Recalling that Masaba was very excited by the development, the actress adds, “What was very exciting for me was the fact that I was 23 years old, and an Indian designer was featured in a global magazine. I felt very proud of it as an Indian! After that, Rhea and I decided that every time the opportunity to be on an international platform came up, we would champion an Indian designer; and we have done that.”

On the films front, Sonam has two tent pole projects, one being Battle for Bittora. The details of other project are being kept under wraps.
