Chennai: Gate 2016 will have a few changes with the inclusion of virtual online calculator. Also, a new stream, petroleum engineering, has been introduced this year.

According to M.V. Reddy, president of T.I.M.E. a coaching institution, there will be a provision of online virtual calculator.

“Virtual calculator has been given on the website for students for practice. No physical calculator will be allowed into the examination rooms,” he said.

He added that students should have enough practice on online calculator so that they can make quick and smart calculations using it.

He also said that students will be provided a facility to challenge their answer keys after paying a nominal fee. The students can cross check answers using this facility.

“There have also been many changes in the examination syllabus of many streams. Students should have very clear idea of the changes in syllabus. Like all times the focus of Gate should be on fundamental topics especially for technical subjects,” he said.

A new stream petroleum engineering has been introduced, said Nitin Rakesh Prasad, co-founder of the Gate Academy. With the addition of this paper the total number of papers would be 23.

“Online calculation will be a difficult one. It needs a lot of practice,” said M. Prakash, a student appearing for Gate examination this year. The Gate examination is on January 30 and 31 and again on February 6 and 7.
