Dr. Ambedkar's second wife was a Brahmin. There are contradictions in every life. To say Gandhi did nothing for dalits is unfair at best. But then all Indians are irrational. Gandhi at least saw some revival, thanks to Manna Bhai. Jawaharlal Nehru is still demonized. Sangh tries to deny not only Gandhi but Nehru his due. With Sangh gaining ground at least in India in last few decades, their smear campaign and rumors became mainstream. Indians have poor reading habits and the intellectuals lack elementary logic and reasoning. Sangh's lies are believed like gospel. There needs to be some awakening somewhere to balance this hate-campaign..... for sake of this country.
In every society and every nation across the world, the past was always mired in wars, slavery and so on. It existed in the east, west, Africa, Asia, Europe - why, practically everywhere. But for the establishment of United nations - these wars would not have stopped. Not that, they have stopped completely. But, they are significantly down.
But, in every Nation, some social tensions are always there. People are divided on the basis of many parameters. Shiv Sena can't tolerate Biharis? why? Karnataka staged protests against Tamils? why?Tamilnadu stages violent protests against Aryans, against Hindi and so on. When I was in North east for 5 years in 2 spells, I found to my surprise that the tribals in Nagaland are fighting each other (violently), the tribals in Manipur are fighting each other violently, the tribals in Mizoram are fighting each other violently. There are no upper castes there. But, the hatred and fighting is there. It has come down to some extent now. Take, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and any other nations where only Muslims are there - and they too are fighting each other. there are no upper castes there too.
In America, Christians are there. But, color division? what to do with that?
So, Past had some social tensions - but, we can only get over them by path of LOVE & NON-VIOLENCE, the path taught by Gandhiji. Gandhiji's main fight was for Swarajya - but, his LIFE itself was full of his love for all DOWNTRODDEN. Ambedkar fought for the SC &ST and it was well justified. But, one thing needs to be understood very clearly. There are many people on both sides who do not want the caste structure at all - and would be glad if it is abolished in a spirit of love and non-violence. But, there are also people on both sides who want to cling to caste structure for one reason or other. If people come together - it would be possible to dissolve caste structure in a definite time span of say 2 decades maximum - with least difficulty for any one.
But, not liking Gandhi - is some thing - which shows not understanding Gandhi.
I am a Citizen of India ......in your words i belong to Upper Caste Community .........Sir.....i have not read Gandhian Philosophy or Amdedkars philosophy .....but i have read many of your articles on various social subjects ...What i find amusing in your articles is that it is your prime agenda to blame the upper castes for supressing the UPRISING of Dalits....but have you ever tried to put in the Dock the MPs and MLAs who have been elected from the constituencies categorized as SC or ST or for that matter any Elected representative ......what are they doing , why are they not making efforts to see that basic / natural rights of every individual are protected and exercised from grass root level ?
In his landmark speech November 1949 in Constituent Assembly, Dr. BR Ambedkar certainly stated there will be no more need for any Satyagraha since all issues can be resolved through constitution and negotiations. There of course is room for demonstrations and lobbying to let voices be heard between elections. But use of Satyagraha for blackmail is unfortunate. Gandhi's last fast was to force Jawaharlal Nehru's government to pay Pakistan Rs. 500 million promised. Patel etc., who were worried that money would be used by Pakistan to fight India in the ongoing Kashmir war, were blackmailed into silence. They probably were right but the blackmail politics forced them betray our own position. Gandhi was certainly more than just a Congressman. Since 1916, he joined Congress and transformed it from a group of wealthy exclusive forward caste lawyers to a mass movement of unprecedented and unparalleled force. Gandhi knew freedom can't be achieved without religious unity and that freedom will have no meaning unless all India can enjoy that equality and freedom. All the national leaders in time became popular by the reflected glory of Gandhi Thatha. Some like Nehru, Patel, Rajendra Prasad and Rajaji set aside their own reservations and followed Gandhi. Others like Dr. Ambedkar, Subhas Bose and Jinnah became well known by taking anti-Gandhi positions. Nobody however could be unmoved by Gandhi's influence. Our own great Alluri Sita Rama Raju timed his Manyam Revolt with Gandhi's first Satyagraha in 1921. Told by Dr. Pattabhi Sita Ramayya, Gandhi supposedly admired Alluri for his patriotism while disapproving his violent ways.
Prof. Dr. Iliah, as usual in the name of fighting for Dalits, looks at every thing through his pet obsessive caste preoccupation. If the Universities are divided on caste lines, and educated people are becoming more and more catste minded, it is due to persons like these.
