IOC to focus on promoting biofuels

Subodh Dakwale said that the focus has now shifted to get five crore LPG connections over the next three years.

Chennai: For promoting mass usage of biofuels in the country, Indian Oil Corporation is focusing on the use of ethanol blended with petrol and diesel for a cleaner environment, and economic benefits to the tune of Rs 50,000 crore per year, according to Subodh Dakwale, executive director of corporate communications.

Lauding the current government in improving the penetration of LPG fuels in the country, he said that the focus has now shifted to get five crore LPG connections over the next three years.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which aims at providing free LPG connections to BPL (Below Poverty Line) households, till date over 38 lakh LPG connections have been given across India and over 80 lakh applications have been cleared.

“TN is one among the many states with a good penetration of LPG, and as of August 21 this year, 63,314 applications for LPG connections under the PMUY scheme have been filed and of them, 54,485 have been cleared for the provision of connections,” said Subodh. He added that among the districts, Ariyalur, Pudukottai, Thirvarur and Villupuram are the ones with less than 60 per cent penetration.
