At two weeks old, Melbourne Zoo’s newest arrival is growing in size — and confidence.

The pygmy hippopotamus calf had his first swimming lesson this week and should soon be ready to make a splash in the big pool in the zoo’s public display. According to the Guardian, this tiny hippo was the first one to be born at the zoo in 34 years. Well in health, he is putting on up to half a kilogram a day.

Petre, the mother hippo has been staying close to the baby throughout this ordeal. Reports claim, once the calf gets older, he will be transported to Adelaide Zoo to participate in their breeding program.
