Karnataka plans gallery to highlight the wonders of river Cauvery

Karnataka tourism department on wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Academy Of Sciences, India (NASI) and Karnataka Jnana Ayoga to establish Cauvery River Gallery on the lines of Brahmaputra River Gallery in Assam and Ganga River Gallery in Allahabad.

Speaking to reporters after signing the MoU, Tourism minister, R.V. Deshpande said Cauvery river gallery which will be established in Mysuru, will be like a museum, where every piece of history associated with the river will be enlisted. “This is an emerging concept where the history of rivers are depicted and how rivers have played their role in transforming the history of mankind. Of late, there are instances of encroachment of river beds too, that will also be showcased keeping the future generation in mind,” he explained.

He added that the gallery will also be showcasing stories and mythology associated with the river.

The NASI convener, Prof. Manju Sharma said, “The main objective of this initiative is to educate people about importance of rivers in one’s life. We need to change our perception on maintaining rivers. Rivers, wells and lakes are being mindlessly polluted. For instance, river Ganga occupies a very important role in every Indian’s life, but pollution levels in this river are at frightening levels, therefore, we need to take such initiatives to highlight the importance of protecting our water sources before it’s too late,” Prof. Sharma said.
