Hyderabad: An online advertisement to sell a kidney for Rs 5 lakh led a 25-year-old man to set up an interstate kidney racket in Nalgonda. Police has busted the racket and apprehended the man.
The man, whose name the police refused to reveal, had approached the Maharashtra-based online firm as a client. After selling his own kidney, he became an agent himself and started luring people and convincing them to sell their kidneys for Rs 5 lakh.
According to sources, the man, a resident of Gandhivarigudem village in Nalgonda, completed his graduation and was in search of a job. He was residing with friends in Hyderabad and often shuttled between Nalg-onda and Hyderabad. Nearly six months ago, he came across an online ad asking for a kidney for Rs 5 lakh. Taking this as an opportunity to clear his family’s financial burdens, he went to the address in Maharashtra given in the online ad. He sold his kidney for Rs 5 lakh and after returning home, purchased a new bike and a mobile phone.
Meanwhile, a few months ago, he met a government employee from Abbasiya Colony in Nalgonda and convinced him to donate his kidney too. He got Rs 50,000 as commission from this transaction. The government employee is also a suspect in the case.
Culprit lured 20 to sell their kidneys
The man accused of selling kidney lured nearly 20 persons into selling their kidneys.
During inquiry, police found that the donor was paid Rs 25,000 as advance and the balance was paid after the operation. The culprit, who was the agent, received Rs 50,000 as commission for each kidney.
Sources,however, said that the agent was paid nearly Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh per kidney. The racket came to light when a few donors, who were paid only Rs 5 lakh, complained to the police about being cheated.
Based on their complaint, the police apprehended the youth and another person. However, police denied to reveal any details saying that the inquiry was on. “We cannot reveal anything now. The inquiry is going on and very soon we will crack the case,” said Nalgonda DSP S. Sudershan.
