Poramboke Land settlers evicted

Police personnel forcefully removed some 60 people residing in the area.

Thrissur: After an eight-year long legal battle with the settlers in the Poramboke Land (revenue land) on the Sankara Iyer Road in Thrissur Town, the district administration demolished eight houses and six shops on Saturday morning.

A large contingent of police personnel forcefully removed some 60 people residing in the area, who protested against the demolition before the drive began.

Corporation councilor representing the area P Sukumaran told DC that the demolition was not for the road widening and was as part of a court order. The district homeopathy hospital located in the area has received a court order to construct a road towards the hospital leading to the eviction.

According to Sukumaran all residents in the Poramboke land, except two, have refused to shift their residence to an apartment at Mattampuram, away from the centre of the town. The rehabilitation of people engaged in running shops in the area is yet to be settled, he added.
