KOCHI: Urban Affairs Minister Shri Manjalamkuzhi Ali on Saturday inaugurated the first septage treatment plant of Kochi at Brahmapuram. The plant is expected to resolve the waste disposal issues in Kochi and neighbouring municipalities and panchayats.
Speaking after inaugurating the plant the minister said similar plants will be set up in Alapuzha and Palakkad districts. Similar projects will also be set in other districts in a phased manner, he added.
The Kochi plant having the capacity to process 5,000 metres of solid waste per day was built with an investment of Rs 4.24 cr. The plant can handle around 20 tankers from the corporation and neighbouring municipalities and panchyats.
The commissioning of the plant is expected to bring an end to the practice of dumping toilet waste in open drains, water bodies and other places. Dumping of toilet waste in open drains and water bodies has become a major public health hazard in the district.
The plant is a result of the Supreme Court order to set up septage treatment plants across districts to address the growing issues of managing and processing the solid waste.
Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP), under the Urban Affairs Ministry of the state government is the nodal agency implementing the project.
