Railways to install onboard system to monitor train health: Suresh Prabhu

Onboard system in coaches to monitor their health and safety of their key components.

New Delhi: Railways plan to install an onboard system in coaches, freight cars and locomotives to monitor their health and safety of their key components, the Lok Sabha was informed on December 16.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said the 'on board rolling stock condition monitoring system' is being planned to monitor the health and safety of key components of coaches, freight cars and locomotives that would finally result in improved safety, improved reliability, higher utilisation and reduced operation cost.

He said the system would enable predictive maintenance and reduction in sudden catastrophic failures of these assets. When Railways call for the bid to procure such systems, the bidders will be asked to submit plans for indigenisation of the systems under 'Make in India' programme, along with their offers.

"As part of Indian Railways Modernisation Programme, we shall be completely switching over to manufacturing current state-of-the-art Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches in our production units in the next four years," he said in a written response.
