People don’t like women with guts in this industry: Anushka Sharma

The actress doesn't mince her words and is vocal about her opinions

Mumbai: Anushka Sharma is one woman who doesn't mince her words and has always expressed her opinions vocally. In an interview with Anupama Chopra, the actress spoke about sexism, producing films, Virat Kohli and everything in between.

Anushka spoke about the roles being offered to woman in Bollywood, she said, "Girls are just expected to be good looking, look nice and adjust be interesting enough for a guy to be interested in you in a film. Women only come along when there is a boy involved, if there’s a love triangle or something like that."

She went on to talk about being treated differently, “Growing up, my parents treated my brother and me with absolute equality. I was never treated differently. I never felt like I was lesser or I was discriminated against. I’ve only experienced that after I became an actor. I was very young when I became an actor, I was 19 years old. But dheere dheere, in my experience with the industry, I started to see the differences. It’s a mindset thing. We talk about how in small towns women get discriminated against, but it happens even here. It’s very, very apparent.”

Anushka said that few people call her an 'activist', "Why are you calling me an activist? They say, because you’re saying these kinds of things. That makes you an activist. I think, people don’t like women with guts in this industry."
When Anushka was asked how does she manage to maintain sense of normalcy in her relationship, given that both her and Virat's profession is constantly in public eye, the actress reveals, "We both have that sense of normalcy. We both are same people except that I don't have so much aggression as him. Virat is emotionally active. Other than that we both are same people and need same things from life. We are in a relationship that is 'normal'. We both don't want to become pawns. Our lives go on in our ways. It is hard for me, when I stand at the stadium and Virat doesn't do well. I feel 'Oh shit, Have I done something wrong?'. Initially it used to happen like that, but then later on I started directing the thoughts on the positive side. We both are very normal people and come from regular middle class family and without any help from anybody in our respective industries, we have reached where we are today. So there is lot of mutual respect between us."
