Walk for trees in Thiruvananthapuram as Paris holds summit

Walk from Putharikandam to Attakulangara

Thiruvananthapuram: Tree Walk will conduct a walk to stress the importance of green lungs in the capital on November 30 to coincide with the U.N Summit on Climate Change in Paris.

“The role of trees and green lungs in mitigating impacts of Climate Change in cities will be the focus of this walk. This is a symbolic walk to create awareness about the value of a green space at a time of rampant urbanisation,” said Anitha Sharma of Tree Walk. The slogan for the walk is: Stay Cool: Green Lung Climate Change’.

The walk will begin from a green lung at the farthest extreme of Putharikandam Maidan in East Fort, pass through Gandhi Park, another green lung, and from there to Attakulangara School where there are large open spaces covered by vegetation.

The walk is also a protest against TRIDA’s move to uproot trees in the Attakulangara campus for a massive development project. East Fort, Ms Sharma said, is the most polluted region in the capital city.

She said that green lungs bring down pollution and helps in carbon absorption. “There are mny trees in the capital’s green lungs that help in carbon absorption. They are mostly large trees, with wide girths. Rain trees and tamarind trees are examples. Attakulangara school has many of them, which are unfortunately now under threat from TRIDA’s development plan,” Ms Sharma said.
